01A Radio
Looks like we're back to stilted tubes again. But at least we don't see
BIG coils or BIG tubes or BIG wire or tubing. Just an innocent little 01A
tube mounted over some gorgeous stuff down below.
Actually, the inspiration for this little entree came from Dave's
Homemade Regenerative Radio and schematic and
variocoupler descriptions page.
The whole concept of my set is centered around the use
of a variometer to control the amount of regeneration rather than a
potentiometer. After studying Dave's page on variocouplers for about a
month it suddenly occurred to me what they were. And then Dave came to
the resque again by explaining what a current-limiting pot was and
actually shipping one to me for the project. The rest is history.
As usual the presentation is unique in that you view the innards of the
variometer in action thanks to clear acrylic space wound coils. The
genuine Remler variable capacitor is also show-cased in acrylic and
positioned on end to display the beautiful brass fins in action. It is
topped off with one of my genuine wood knobs....you don't want to be
messing around with those counterfeit ones at all!
Actually, if viewed objectively most 5th graders would have little problem
wiring this schematic in about 20 minutes. Those who have viewed my other
work will not be too surprised to learn that I am still battling my way
towards completion of this one but I expect victory at any moment. First
I have to re-build my little power supply because this set runs on a 2
volt filament and 45 volt plate supply. Then I'll be able to test my
circuitry and immediatly begin the litany of re-soldering, cursing,
re-soldering.....Hey, but after that it's on the market for a quick
(see pricelist).
And I might just throw my soul in to boot!
